So who is the genius who invented a CHOCOLATE spread to eat on your toast for BREAKFAST??? Pietro Ferrerro form Italy is the one who invented Nutella…I love you Pietro!!!

It think this is just the best Christmas Gift idea for the Chocolate lover in your family! Plus you can make a double batch and keep a jar for yourself!! (That’s what I did!).

I got some cute material, some ribbon and cute labels to decorate it and I think it turned out pretty cute :).

Anyhow…Make sure you have a good food processor!

Recipe from : http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Nutella/

Course: Breakfast    Yield: 15 servings    Prep Time: 10 mins    Cook Time: 20 mins

Ingredients

  • 7 Ounce of hazelnuts
  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 9 Ounce of dark chocolate
  • 1/2 Cup of milk
  • 3 small jars (mason jars or other style)
  • material, ribbon and tags to decorate (if you want!)

Instructions

  1. On medium heat, dry roast your hazelnuts for about 10-15 minutes. The nuts should smell toasty, not burnt. BE CAREFUL and stay close to make sure they do not burn because it happens in a second.
  2. Place hazelnuts in food processor and pulse away. This step takes some time, but you'll be done once the hazelnuts have the texture of peanut butter.
  3. In a double boiler, melt the chocolate until smooth and just melted. You can add a pinch of salt here if you wish. Remove from heat, and pour into a mixing bowl.
  4. Add sweetened condensed milk and mix thoroughly.
  5. Pour your hazelnut butter into your chocolate mixture, and combine. You will have a very thick dough-like chocolate mixture. Add tiny pours of warm milk until you reach your desired consistency.
  6. Take your Nutella through another round in the food processor if you wish, just to smooth things up a bit. Pour into your jars or enjoy it right away!!!!!

    Should this be kept refrigerated?

    • Doesn’t have to be 🙂

    • Hi! To be on the safe side you can put it in the fridge but make it a bit thinner (with warm milk) because the spread will get a bit harder in the fridge!:) The sugar content should keep it from going bad but “better be safe than sorry”:)

  • This is a great idea because Nutella, while delicious, is actually filled with partially hydrogenated palm oil with is horribly unhealthy! Something else you could try is candying your hazelnuts before buttering them. It’s something the French do all the time and while it isn’t exactly healthy it adds a wonderful flavor to the spread! And perhaps using a super dark chocolate could balance out the sweetness.

  • Hi Alex. Thanks for sharing. But I’ve a bit of a conundrum – I want to make this for the office christmas lunch but will have to give it to a colleague a week in advance as I’m travelling at that time. Will it stay fresh for a week? What kind of jar shall I use?

    • Hi Afsha!
The nutella should keep for more than a week no problem but if you want to be on the safe side, tell your coworkers to put it in the fridge. Now the spread will get harder when you put it in the fridge so you could make it a bit thinner ( with warm milk). For the jar, you can use a mason jar or the kind of jar I used ( see the picture). Happy holidays! 🙂
