For me, coffee is not only a beverage that I love, it’s more than just the taste. My mom has been drinking coffee since I was a child so for me, the smell of coffee makes me feel at home. Nothing beats a warm cup of coffee on a cold rainy day.
I remember when I was starting High school, the cool kids would drink coffee and I really wanted to be like them, drinking my coffee, being all grown up. So I would go to coffee shops and buy the coffee that would taste the least like coffee: Chocolate, Caramel, Vanilla Swirl, whatever I could get in there, I would. I hated it at first (Probably because of all the different sugary overpowering flavors that I would put in) but I did grow to love coffee and my day is just not the same if I don’t get to have my dose of caffeine in the morning!
So for the International Coffee Day, I decided to write a little something about the origins of coffee, as well as fun facts on this wonderful and very popular beverage!
We do not know for sure where and when coffee was discovered but there is a couple of different legends about it’s origins. The most popular one says that while travelling to Ethiopia, the Yemenite Sufi mystic Shaikh ash-Shadhili observed goats of unusual vitality, and, upon trying the berries that the goats had been eating, experienced the same vitality. One of the possible origins of coffee is the Kingdom of Kaffa in Ethiopia, where the coffee plant originated.
When coffee was discovered, as you could have gathered from the goat legend, it was not made into a liquid but eaten just like that, as a berry from the coffee tree.
The Coffee bean actually grows in a bright red berry, just like the following picture shows.
Since Islam would forbid the consumption of alcohol, coffee was a great alternative to the people and this fact made coffee very popular through Islamic nations and later on, around the world.
Coffee is the second most traded product after petroleum!!
Anyways, I will leave it at that and go make myself a nice pot of coffee!
Happy International Coffee Day Everyone!
